athenaMed is the new eLearning portal of the medical faculty at the University of Heidelberg. athenaMed replaced its successor athena in early 2006 not changing the system .LRN.

It is the so called “black board” for collaborating and communicating between students and lecturers and to present all the necessary information for the students concerning their stage of learning. The open-source-software .LRN covers the whole field of eLearning, is user-friendly and because of its modular design easy to configure and to customize.

System-migration background

  • Raising licensing-costs and usability problems with WebCT lead to the  search for an alternative product
  • Basic requirements have been the support for collaboration and  communication as well as the possibility to customize the application.
  • Software that is financed by public funds should be accessible for   everybody
